(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study, wind energy now accounts for 6% of the United State's electricity. Much of that total is due to the many projects that are coming online at the end of the year in order to beat expiring Production Tax Credit.
In 2012 the wind-generated electricity market grew 28%, with over 13.2 gigawatts of wind turbines being installed. In December alone, 5.5 GW were added. The energy that resulting came from 190 wind projects that were installed across 32 states, as well as Puerto Rico. The projects represented $25 billion of private investment.
The United States has over 60 gigawatss of wind that it has installed, which is enough power to keep 15 million homes buzzing. That is 10 more gigawatts from August of 2012. It is great news for the environment, and those concerned about it, as the total energy produced helps the amount of carbon emissions that have been avoided rise to 1.8% total.
In 2012 wind energy was the top source for new electricity capacity for the first time in the United States, as it accounted for 42% of new capacity added. The total of renewable energy combined by all types was 55% as a whole.
"What is just as striking as the new records is the expansion of new customers. A total of 66 utilities bought or owned wind power in 2012, up from 42 in 2011. We are also seeing growth in new customers in the industrial and commercial sectors purchasing or owning wind energy directly," says Rob Gramlich, Interim CEO of American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).
The new purchases in wind across the last year included some industrial buyers, 11 universities and eight towns/cities. The increase across sectors showed a significant trend by Americans to utilize non traditional power purchases, including purchases within the often wary industrial sector, according to the AWEA.
