(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- There are a long list of diseases that are not life threatening, but that can make life more less enjoyable to live, and lower the overall quality of life. Such diseases include arthritis, back pain, and skin afflictions, which are all at the top of the list in a new study by the Mayo Clinic.
“Surprisingly, the most prevalent non-acute conditions were not chronic conditions related to aging, such as diabetes and heart disease, but rather conditions that affect both genders and all age groups,” said Dr. Jennifer St. Sauver, lead author of the study and a member of the Population Health Program at the Mayo Clinic Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery.
The researchers of the study looked over 140,000 patients in the Minnesota area over a five-year period, and categorized varying diagnoses based upon disease groups. The patients were entered in as part of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, and the medical records system that kept track of the residents of Olmsted County who frequented the Mayo Clinic.
Of the top diseases were Skin disorders at 42% of patients. Osteoarthritis and joint disorders comprised one-third of patients, with back problems for 24% of all surveyed. Just under a quarter of patients had some sort of Cholesterol problem, while upper respiratory conditions (discounting asthmatics) was at an equal 22%. One in every five individuals suffered from either anxiety, depression, or some form of bipolar spectrum. Chronic neurological disorders, high blood pressure, headaches/migraines, and diabetes also made the top of the list.
“Much research already has focused on chronic conditions, which account for the majority of health care utilization and costs in middle-aged and older adults,” said Dr. St. Sauver. “We were interested in finding out about other types of conditions that may affect large segments of the population across all age groups.”
