(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 25, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Jodie Foster's coming out speech was timed to perfection. He was well groomed, regal, and gallant in her opportunity as she took the opportunity to give the biggest soliloquy of her life. However, because she is an actor, she began her speech whilst receiving the Cecil B DeMille award by claiming spontaneity: "I have a sudden urge to say something that I've never been able to air in public."
The problem is that it was not a sudden urge or moment of must that came from Foster. The sort-of coming out speech that she gave, was 50 years in the making. Forth-seven of those years has been placed in front of the camera, and for most of which she has been in what some would title a “glass closet”.
Still, the speech was not poorly done, and not an embarrassment. In fact it was glorious and gracious, as well as funny. Following her "I'm just gonna put it out there loud and proud" build-up she snatched away the expected "I'm gay!" denouement with, "I am single. Yes I am. I am single." Laughter. Applause.
Fosters speech was as moving as it was well-planned and put together. Foster recalled coming out privately "in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her."
Many viewers were likely to continue to be moved when she justified her zip-lipped attitude toward her personal life thus far. "If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you'd had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else."
Many can likely sympathize, and Fosters classy and meaningful self-outing, somehow downplayed on a large state, is a wonderful reminder the courage it takes. It also reminds many just how easy it is to accept those who lead their lives with dignity and with silent honor, even before they make bolder steps to be vocal.
