(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Norway is once again embattled within itself regarding a parental abuse case.
A court in Norway has convicted an Indian couple, stating that the parents maltreatment of their seven-year-old son. The sentencing is the second time that an Indian couple have fallen short of the Norwegian expectation of parenting laws.
What can be described as a war of words has thus broken out over what constitutes good parenting. The issue takes political, diplomatic, cultural, and race-relations, along with human rights, and rolls them into a single story that has many debating beliefs.
The Norway “child abuse” case has created a renewed fervor that debate on “tiger” versus tame parenting.
In a random sampling of Twitter comments from India, what has become clear is that many seem puzzled by the Norwegian response to the situation. Many believe that the parents are at fault for going too far in their particular actions, but defending the philosophy behind “a few slaps” from a parent, as they believe it “teaches something”.
Some are not so much worried about the law as they are about the effect the situation has on the image of Indians.
The Oslo district court charged a software professional on assignment in Norway, along with his wife, for “gross and repeated maltreatment” of a child and the the jail term for 18 and 15 months.
Authorities state that the child was scalded, hit, and threatened that he would be sent away. One of the reasons stated for the punishments was wetting himself on a school bus. The Authorities alleged that the abuse took place over a long period of time.
The family denies the charges and will be appealing the verdict. Under Norwegian law, they are allowed to take recourse within the coming days. In the meantime, the story has raised debates and conversation about proper parenting, and where lines ought be drawn in effective parenting manners.
