(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 23, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study, there is a lack of freshwater runoff in the Auburn's Outlet Beach, and the area is a poor spot for the Twin Cities' only public swimming hole. The new was released by recently regarding the unfortunate news.
The findings were that levels of fecal bacteria in the area were higher than Environmental Protection agencies standards could deem acceptable in nearly a third of the tests performed since 2005.
The city councilors are now scheduled to review the information at the Auburn Hall.
The report was written by New Hampshire's Comprehensive Environmental Inc. for the Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission, as well as the city. The report was based on water quality that have been utilized since 2005 up to last summer.
"Understanding the physical constraints of that area, I don't think it's built to support swimming for large numbers of people while still remaining healthy," said Mary Jane Dillingham, water quality manager for the Auburn Water District and the Lewiston Water Department.
Auburn has no public swimming pools, and so the news is an unfortunate one for many residents.
Outlet Beach is located on Lake Auburn outlet on the east side of Route 4 and swimming has thus far been allowed. Swimming is not allowed in Lake Auburn elsewhere as it is the Auburn and Lewiston's water supply.
The study noted that two levels of harmful bacteria, enterococcus and E. coli were taken out of the small pond. Both bacteria are common in both human and animal digestive systems.
A lack of fresh water may be the cause of the failed tests, according to the study. Due to the general topography of the area, water runs out from Lake Auburn to the outlet into Bobbin Mill Brook.
