Not Enough Sleep Means More Than Enough Weight reports Hunger STOP

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 23, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- If you are one of the many who think five or so hours of sleep is enough each night, think again. New research coming from the University of Colorado-Boulder stated that people who sleep for five hours or less could put on more weight than those who get a nine-hour stretch most nights.

The research added to its findings, that the lack of sleep, in itself, does not directly lead to obesity. However, a mix of lacking sleep, easy access to unhealthy foods, and a lack of extended exercise are the trifecta of added weight. For those from cities like Mumbai, where individuals sit at a desk for hours at a time, taking in high-calorie drinks, the study points a finger directly at them.

The study, which was recently published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences, expressed that sleeping for less than six hours per night over an entire work week, while having unlimited access to food caused participants to gain nearly two pounds of weight.

There were previous studies that showed the lack of sleep leads to weight gain, but the reasons for the weight gain itself were considered unclear. This new research shows that staying awake longer hours requires more energy, and the amount of food ingested is used for those extra hours, without being utilized properly through exercise.

The participants in the University of Colorado study who were of the group sleep as many as five hours per night burned 5% more energy, while taking in 6% more calories. The authors also noted that those who received less sleep tended to eat smaller breakfasts while binging at after-dinner hours. The calories that were consumed in the evening were larger in number than those calories taken in within the individual meals throughout the day.

"When people are sleep-deprive, our findings show they eat during their biological night-time when internal physiology is not designed to be taking in food," said the study's main investigator Kenneth Wright in a press release. He said it is time for weigh-loss program to incorporate healthy sleep as an important aspect.
