TV May Be Linked Inability to Sleep reports Shop Bedding

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 23, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The idea of watching TV or listening to music helping one relax and fall asleep may be a common misconception, according to a Taiwanese Society of Sleep Medicine Study.

In a new survey published, the group noted that one-in-five individuals is an insomniac, and in a series of questions focused on pre-sleep activity, the study noted that the majority of those polled watched TV or played with their phones before sleeping. Each activity was noted in 33.1% of individuals polled.

The remaining individuals polled often read magazines, or listened to music or radio broadcasts.

Wu Chia-shuo, who is a doctor and worked with the group directly, noted that while watching television and utilizing smartphones were of the highest-ranked activities, the two had very different effects upon the brain.

When one views television, it is often for nearly 1-2 hours, and the remaining time during the active mind is working is shorter than those who use various other activities prior to sleep, says Wu.

Wu added that when comparing the insomniac with the average sleeping individuals, 43% of insomniacs would choose TV whilst they await sleep, while 37% of actual sleeps choose the same.

The link between television and sleep is still not fully determined, according to Wu, and as of now the relationship is purely speculative. Wu also opposed doing anything before sleep that had little or nothing to do with actually preparing to sleep. He added that if individuals wanted to listen to music, they ought to do so on the sofa or in a chair, then go to their sleeping place when they feel drowsy.

“When you lie down on the bed, you should go to sleep,” Wu said, adding that any activity done in bed that is not sleeping could easily cause people to become more excited or stressed, which are not conducive to helping them enter sleep.
