(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 22, 2013 ) Chicago, IL -- The owner of a dog that was found floating on ice floes on Friday was not able to claim his friend until a few days later, but the reunion will be enjoyed on Sunday.
Nerijus Steponavicius claimed his dog that had been missing from the Animal Care & Control on friday, but was told he could pick up his dog on Saturday. Now the owner must wait for the retriever to be neutered and microchipped before the dog can come home.
Steponavicius stated that he will be back with his father on Sunday to pick up the dog, but was very happy that his dog was alive and safe.
"He's really shy and he started jumping," Steponavicius said.
Steponavicius stated that the dog has no history of running away before the incident and that he would never let a runaway happen again. He plans to take the pup to his parents house so it can play with other dogs owned by his father, however, those plans are now on hold.
“I'm just disappointed,” he said, regarding the wait.
Rescue crews found the dog on Friday after they saw him jumping from ice floe to ice floe on Howard Street Beach.
The dog is named “Pifas” and managed to get loose days before when Steponavicus' landlord was busy changing the locks during Stephanovicus' school hours. He posted notices on Facebook regarding his missing companion. He strove straight to the animal shelter once he was told of his dog's adventures on the ice floe.
Pifas was found 200 feet off the shore of Lake Michigan when the word reached the fire officials of an animal being loose on the ice.
"I wanted to just grab him because it was shallow enough where I could stand, and I just wanted to get my hands on him but he wanted to bite me, it looked like. He didn't want anyone touching him," said Kehnast.
Eventually, Pifas jumped into Lake Michigan and swam to the snowy shore. He took off from there, temporarily eluding authorities. The rescue crews eventually caught up with the animal, and ushered it back to the van to transport it to a rescue facility.
"The biggest lesson, once again: keep those dogs on leashes along the lakefront in the wintertime," said Chicago Fire Department Deputy District Chief Ron Dorneker. "This is what can happen when they get out there on that ice and they fall through and they get a distance off-shore. It gets to be dangerous for them and for us."
