(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Associated Press Sports Editors group has seen improvements in diversity, as the number of women and individuals of color have improved at the 150 websites involved in the group. That said, a report released recently by the University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports gave members of the APSE a failing grade in overall gender hiring practices.
The report noted that the outlets had a C+, which is the same it had in 2010, when it came to race. When it came to gender hires, the group earned its third consecutive F. This is the fourth report on the APSE.
Overall, the report noted that the sports departments continue to be led by white men.
In 2012, there were 90.9% of sports editors, and 86.6% of assistant sports editors that were classified as white males. Meanwhile, 83.9% of columnists and 86.3% of reporters were of the same demographics. Copy editors and designers came in at 86% white males. The numbers remain relatively unchanged since 2010 in most categories, with the largest change being a 6% drop in editors.
The first Latina sports editor was reported in this year's study of ESPN; however, the overall 90.4% of sports editors being men showed there is still too much ground to cover to declare a victory in the field.
"This is happening of course at a time where the number of people working at newspapers has been dramatically decreasing. But nonetheless the numbers have consistently stayed low," said primary study author Richard Lapchick. "The good news is APSE continues to want to do this and open itself up to the public.
"They have long way to go in this area. But the fact that they asked for this report is a sign they want to bring about change."
APSE president Gerry Ahern stated that the entire organization is working to be proactive in its improvement. He highlighted the Diversity Fellowship Program that was initiated last year for mid-career journalists, as well as the Scripps Howard Day of Diversity at Hampton University Sports Journalism Institution.
"Clearly there remains much work to be done," Ahern said. "Our commitment to improving diversity has not wavered....Progress will come if we remain steadfast."
