New Study Suggests Exercise Helps More Than Muscles reports Pool Merchants

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 22, 2013 ) New York, NY -- Getting the kids to the soccer field or to the swimming pool may have a more in-depth benefit set for the children than simply keeping them busy and in good shape, according to a new set of research. A study now suggests that exercise also saves kids from stress.

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism has published the study, which finds that the higher the level of physical activity in children, the lower the stress reactivity.

The research looked at 258 eight-year-olds in Helsinki, Finland. The researchers noted that children with moderate or vigorous physical activity showed little or no increases in cortisol levels express they were exposed to stress. The contrast came in children with lower activity levels, who showed significant increases in cortisol over time when exposed to stress.

The authors also noted that the means in which exercise is implemented may have as much to do with the children's' mental health as well, but those hypotheses are not yet fully tested.

The study has been published just days before the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services releases a report stating that children and teens are not receiving enough physical activity, and that schools need to begin to make changes to ramp up P.E. Programs across the board.

The report has been promoted by recent studies issued by the government, which note that less than a third of high school students meet the requirements set by the federal guidelines. Young adults and teens are supposed to receive at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

The studies also showed that improved activity also improves grades on the average. The journal of Pediatrics showed that exercise improves behavioral and academic activities alike for children who express signs of ADD or ADHD.

"Schools sacrificing physical education and physical activity time in search of more seat time for math and reading instruction could potentially be pursuing a counterproductive approach," study lead researcher Dr. Robert Rauner said in a statement.
