Educational Effects on Marriage reports Favors By Serendipity

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 17, 2013 ) San Clemente, CA -- In a new study, married couples who have attained higher education levels are less likely to incur divorce as less-educated couples; however, a new study conducted showed there is also significant racial differences.

“African-American women don’t seem to enjoy the same degree of protection that education confers on marriage,” said Jeounghee Kim, assistant professor at the school. “For white Americans, higher education is related to a lower chance of divorce, and this protective effect of education on marriage increased consistently among the recent generations. But for African-American women, higher education is not necessarily related to a lower chance of divorce.”

In a new study published in the Family Relations journal, Silberman Fund Faculty Grand member Kim observed that overall, the divorce rate leveled off since the 1980s after a rise that persisted through the century. At the same time, the rate has diverged amongst races and socioeconomic classes when measured by education level that was attained. The divorce rate remained steady for white women, while was less stable for African-American women.

Researchers studied white and African-American women in five-year margins separately, taking into account demographic characteristics that included motherhood status, general age, geographic region, and when one was married. Marital dissolution rather than legal divorce was also measured, while many African-American women eschew in favor of than a permanent separation.

The analysis showed that white women with post-secondary education continuously increased throughout the measures. The same could not be said for African-American women, whose education peaked in the decade starting in 1985 and ended in 1994, then seeing a decline.

Concurrently, she noted that the percentage of white women with marital breakups declined while African-American women saw a noted increase in the 80s before declining in the first half of the 90s.
