Bill Clinton Says DoMA Should Be Overturned reports Favors By Serendipity

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 17, 2013 ) San Clemente, CA -- In a new opinion piece released by the Washington Post, former President of the United States, Bill Clinton released a statement noting that he believes the anti-gay measure he signed into law ought to be overturned.

Clinton presided over the country from 1993 to 2001, and stated that it was “a very different time” when he signed the Defense of Marriage act while in term. No U.S. state recognized gay marriage at the time, while some were certainly seen to be moving in that direction, he noted.

The federal lawmakers then debated various responses while he sat in office. Many supporters of the DoMA believed that its passage was set to remove all discussion regarding the matter, if not pushing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

Noting that the Supreme Court will hear arguments challenging the very constitutionality of DoMA, clinton has now written to the justices, stating “must decide whether it is consistent with the principles of a nation that honors freedom, equality and justice above all, and is therefore constitutional.”

“As the president who signed the act into law, I have come to believe that DOMA is contrary to those principles and in fact, incompatible with our Constitution.”

The Obama administration has also been urging the highest court to strike down the law. The administration has noted that it violates the guarantees of equal protection under law, and does so by denying same-sex married couples the federal benefits available to their heterosexual counterparts.

Nine states as well as the District of Columbia now allow same-sex marriage.

Clinton wrote that at the time of his signing the law, he included a statement that its enactment ought not “be understood to provide an excuse for discrimination.”

“Reading those words today, I know now that, even worse than providing an excuse for discrimination, the law is itself discriminatory. It should be overturned,” he said.
