(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 17, 2013 ) San Clemente, CA -- According to new research, a happily married couple is more likely to enjoy better overall physical and mental health when compared to those who have more rocky relationships.
The study is good news for those within a good marriage, as they are more likely to have stronger health as they grow older. This means that aging adults in poor physical health could see improvement if he/she is capable of finding a strong and steady relationship.
Christine Proulx, who sits as assistant professor in the University of Missouri Department of Human Development and Family Studies, examined a longer-term correlation between the self-rated health and marital quality. She found that no matter what stage of the marriage, positive or negative relationship perception impacts the individual'sÂ’ health.
She also noted that the spouses should keep aware of how they treat one another and how happy they are in the general relationship as both partners play a role in the health process. That means that one must consider the maintenance of the relationship for not only personal reasons, but for the sake of another, whom one cares for. Happily married persons are always found to have better health that those who are generally unhappy within the marriage.
"We often think about the aging process as something we can treat medically with a pill or more exercise, but working on your marriage also might benefit your health as you age," Proulx said in a press release. "Engaging with your spouse is not going to cure cancer, but building stronger relationships can improve both people's spirits and well-being and lower their stress."
Proulx suggests that health professionals factor in patients' personal relationships when designing health promotion programs or treatment plans.
"Physicians should recognize that the strength of patients' marriages might affect their health," she said. "I suspect we'd have higher rates of adherence to treatment plans for chronic illnesses if medical professionals placed more of an emphasis on incorporating families and spouses in patients' care. If spouses understand their partners' disease and how to treat it at home, and the couple has a strong marriage, both people's health could improve."
