(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 14, 2013 ) Huntington Beach, CA -- The gaming publisher of “Call of Duty”, Activision Blizzard Inc., has seen one of its gaming series become the most commercially successful series in the history of the industry, now topping a billion in the franchise.
The Santa Monica-based company revealed on Monday that its toy-game hybrid “Skylanders” has topped $1 billion in worldwide retail sales. The figure reflects all encompassed sales for 'Skylanders” since the debut of the franchise just over a year ago. The numbers include the sales of two major console games “Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure” as well as the 2012 release “Skylanders: Giants.”
The franchise debuted in 2011, and Activision CEO Bobby Kotick maintained a pledge that he would be creating a new $1 billion franchise from the toy series by creating a congruent push for toys and videogames for the series. His promise turned prophetic as the growth of the series came after many flops from other gaming companies to create a wedding of toy designs and gaming fell flat. Countless examples from Pokemon to Disney can be pointed to as examples as how the toy market can be a difficult one to handle for even the most seasoned of publishers.
“The ‘Skylanders’ franchise became the first kids’ video game IP to cross the $1 billion mark in just 15 months, and I think we are still just starting to realize its potential,” Activision publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said in a statement.
“We knew that the simple, but magical idea, of bringing your toys to life in a video game could change both the video game and the toy industries, and more importantly, change the way kids play.”
Paul Teiche, who is a game industry vet and one of the creators of “Skylanders” noted the studio Toys for Bob, repeated Hirshberg's sentiment in an interview, stating “’Skylanders’ is really defined by this interaction between toys and a video game.”
