Action Games Improve Reading in Dyslexics reports Gameriza

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 14, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Those who believe video games are bad for kids might want ot take a look at a new study noted by a University of Padua study recently published titled “Action Video games Make Dyslexic Children Read Better.” As the title suggests, evidence is given that shows playing action-oriented games increases the reading comprehension skills within dyslexics.

The experiment focused on children between the ages of seven and 13 years of age. The children were separated into two groups: The first played nine 80-minute sessions of an action-packed game titled “Rayman Raving Rabbids” while the second group played a placid game. After the subjects were tested on their general reading skills. Those who played the action-based games were able to read both faster and more accurately than the children who were given the placid game.

The study was published in the journal Current Biology, and found that children who played the action-packed games for 12 hours exhibited large levels of improvement in their reading capability. Their average overall reading during the year was also much higher.

The authors hypothesized that action games rapidly hone the player's visual attention spans and taught them to take in critical information more effectively from the surrounding environment. Those two skills are well-known as being critical to the success of reading for individuals.

The findings contradict conventional wisdom that gaming is “bad for young brains” and is likley to be a weapon for the video game industry and advocates like media theorist Steven Johnson and designer Jane McGonigal. Johnson made his argument in his book “Everything Bad Is Good For You” in which he claimed video games boost general IQ levels. McGonigal wrote that games teach both confidence and altruism in her book “Reality Is Broken”.
