(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Last week, what was the largest collection of health insurance data ever compiled in Canada and perhaps the world, kicked off with volunteers reporting for duty.
With the input gathered from over 50,000 individuals across the country, the Canadian Longitudinal Study on the Aging effect in the 20-year-project that were collected were of individuals from ages 45 to 85.
Each participant was selected at random and invited to take part, which they could (as per usual) accept or decline. The first of 3,000 individuals drafted in the Victoria region started to show up at the Gorge Road Hospital on Thursday.
The individuals were asked questions on a range of topics including lifestyle, social, and general health. Each is also set to undergo medical tests for items such as bone density, vision, balance, and mental fitness. Blood and urine samples will also be taken and flown to McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario to be frozen and stored for later research.
Furthermore, 2,500 participants will be further interviewed by telephone at the Victoria site.
Within a three-year period, the data collection will take place with the same subjects. By continually collecting data, the value becomes an invaluable item for researchers that are interested in the aging process. As subjects age, their general health data will be collected over-and-over. With the constant updating, researchers can examine and learn from each of the changing types.
Holly Tuokko, who is director of the Center on Again at the University of Victoria, stated that the sample size for the project makes it the largest ever to be attempted in Canada.
Tuokko stated that the depth of the information likely makes the most detailed survey ever conducted. It has already attracted worldwide interest, with a slew of international researchers collaborating on the methodology that the data research will undergo.
“This is not only going to be of use to Canada, it is going to be of use to people worldwide,” Tuokko said.
