(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 13, 2013 ) Los Angeles, CA -- In China, Movies fans were recently welcomed to a popular movie website that had finally become unlocked; however, it was unclean if the move suggested an overall relaxing of the rule sets that govern China's entertainment and media section of cyberspace, or whether it was simply a deal forged for particular media information sites.
Chinese viewers discovered this week that the restrictions on IMDb's website, which provides general movie news and production details for a wide array of movies, was unexpectedly lifted earlier in the week.
Both IMDb's Chinese and English-language versions were blocked in 2010. Many believed the Beijing authorities had extended the ban after the site featured movies on its website that focused on “sensitive issues” as deemed by the ruling Communist Party.
"This is really good news," said one blogger on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, reacting on Thursday to the unblocking.
Each of the print, film, and broadcast media types are still under strict control in the county, while the internet is subject to a wide range of restrictions. The entire effort is noted as the Great Firewall of China. Authorities within China have expressed mixed feelings on the media censorship within the past several months. With a new change of regime in the country, it appears changes like the IMDb move could possibly become more common.
The opposite may prove to be true as well, as last month the country's top media regulator noted that it would be expanding pre-broadcast censorship to television documentaries. At the same time, “V for Vendetta”, a movie which expresses an anarchist uprising against a totalitarian government, was aired on state television at the end of 2012.
