(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- In the 1990, stores still held out a chance against companies like Walmart. According to Charles Fishman The Wal-Mart Effect, a history of the rise of the retail giant, it was that precise year that Walmart surpassed Kmart in sales. It was not until 1992 that Walmart sold more than Sears. Now in 2011, Walmart has higher sales across the globe than the combined total sales of the the six largest retailers that follow it: Kroger, Target, Walgreens, costco, Home Depot, and CVS.
In that year, Amazon ranked 15 on the list of the largest retailers. Its sales for the past year are likely to bump the company up to number seven in the overall rankings. That will place it ahead of CVS, and just a couple billion behind the always-prevalent Target. Amazon is now bigger than Best Buy, Safeway, Macy's, Rite Aid, and Lowes. It also bests Kmart and Sears in overall sales.
Some Wall Street analysts are now starting to note that Amazon's sales could triple by 2016, and would place it at No. 2 behind Walmart. That would make Amazon the only true rival to Walmart.
The lone precedent for Amazon's rise is Wal Mart's own meteoric rise to the top. That means that while Amazon tries to find a way to follow in Wal Mart's footsteps, Walmart will be looking for ways to burn bridges to competition.
Amazon must now resist the concept of resting on its successes. While the company continues to cement its dominance through internet sales, a small army of smaller companies are starting to take bites out of Amazon's overall dominance. Much of Amazon started out by setting its sights on bookselling. Amazone was able to unseat so many stores that are almost synonymous with purchasing in the last 15 years, then Jeff Bezos knows that the same can surely happen to his company in the same fashion.
Bezos has to also be aware that these new start-ups, while seemingly only slightly annoying, have Google to prop them up. Unlike Amazon, Google makes huge levels of profit.
Google has become increasingly aggressive to take online retails away from Google. The fight has and will be one of the more interesting for those in the business industries. GoogleÂ’s unique positioning in the internet's infrastructure will mean it can count on its own resources in its bid to dethrone Amazon. The search engine can simultaneously be a platform for other companies to eat away at Amazon's capability to having clout in the market.
