(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While Seth MacFarlane may have ruffled a feather here or there, he also showed that he does have the chops to handle such a grand-stand as the Academy Awards.
Best-known for being a bad-boy creator and character voice actor for “Family Guy” and “American Dad”, McFarlane recently had a semi-successful hit in “Ted” which starred his voice acting which went alongside co-star Mark Wahlberg.
MacFarlane seized the camera Sunday as the host of the ABC's Oscarcast and proved that he is clearly not simply a writer left with only sophomoric humor. He expressed charm, irreverent and polorizing humor, and some truly well-timed and well crafted jokes.
MacFarlane showed the wide range his jokes can span, as he would rattle off a joke that one might have heard Bob Hope utter decades prior, and follow it up with, “I would argue that the actor who really got inside Abraham Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth.”
For those who were at all offended by MacFarlane's performance would have been wise to tune in to his Saturday Night Live apperance last fall. Still, the Osctars hosting gig was truly a Main Event for MacFarlane and his skills. It is an elegant affair, including a surprise appearances by Michelle Obama, live from the White House.
In what was perhaps McFarlane's most sophomoric, and simultaneously brilliantly crafted moment, the host had William Shatner (as Captain Kurk of Star Trek) explain to MacFarlane that he was about to ruin the show by singing a terribly juvenile song called “We Saw Your Boobs”. Viewers were then treated (or held captive) to a full version of the song. While this moment may have turned some of middle America off to the show, the genius is quite easy to see, as MacFarlane then followed up with three classy and classic songs in short order. In essence, he made the 'inappropriate' song be something of theory or fantasy, and thus 'not his fault', while the following three pieces were all acted live. Not only that, they were done well and with celebrity accompaniment.
So while some may still be held accountable for “bad taste” he clearly also had the talent and skill to make up for each off-color joke or juvenile remark.
