Iran Dismisses Argo Win reports Movie Beast

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Iranian state TV dismissed Argo, which won best picture for best film at the 2013 Oscar Awards, as an “advertisement for the CIA” and some Iranians called the awards a politically motivated statement by the Americans for its unflattering portrayal of the aftermath which followed the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Argo did not appear in any Iranian cinema, but there was no shortage of buzz regarding the movie through its bootleg DVD which spread across the nation.

The discussion over Argo in Iran have been pried open into a generational divide. Iranians that were present and took part in the 1979 Islamic Revolution picked apart the portrayals of Tehran during the time, and younger Iranians that cannot recall the events give a very different view of the upheavals.

“I want to know what the other side is saying,” said Shieda, a 21-year-old University of Tehran student, who gave only her first name to avoid possible backlash for speaking with foreign media.

Tehran City Council Member Masoumeh Ebtekar, who was one of the many students who occupied the U.S. Embassy as well as being an Iranian students' spokesperson, stated the film exaggerated the influence amongst crowds that stormed the compound.

Fifty-two Americans were held hostage for nearly 450 days, while a handful of embassy staff were sheltered by the Canadian ambassador, and escaped using a famke movie for a cover story. Argo follows this basic premise.

Actor and director Ben Affleck “goes and shows scenes of a very violent and very angry mob throughout the film,” Ebtekar said. “It is never mentioned that these are a group of students.”

Mehr news agency called the Oscar “politically motivated” due to the First Lady Michelle Obama joining in the handing out of the award. Iran's state TV called the movie an “advertisement for the CIA”.

What is being overlooked in all of the hoopla surrounding the award, is that Argo was probably the weakest and least creative or gripping movie of all the nominations for best picture. More than political motivation, the awarding of the film was likely more a middle-of-the-road safe award to give producer George Clooney and long-time good-ole boy Ben Affleck, who have made billions for the industry.
