Tickets Do Not Usually Raise Insurance Costs reports Car Insurance Promotional Codes

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While it is contrary to what many may believe, receiving a ticket often fails to automatically lead to a car insurance increase.

Only 31% of drivers who were ticketed in the past half-decade paid an increase, according to an InsuranceQuote.com survey.

"It's a myth that insurance companies are constantly checking your record, and that if you get ticketed you'll be noticed right away," says Laura Adams, the site's senior insurance analyst. "It might be the case if you're a younger driver. But for the majority of drivers, it's not."

If you are 18 to 25 years of age, your insurer is probably pulling up the MVR once every half-year. Due to insurers viewing younger drivers as a risky investment, they monitor the records much more closely.

"But if you're an older driver," Adams says, "and you've got a good record—if you've gone 10 years, say, without a ticket—then they're not going to be pulling it often, if at all." The reason is cost. Pulling the report is expensive for insurers.

For just over 40% of young drivers, a ticket means an increase in premiums, compared to the 32% of drivers aged 30 to 49 years of age. Only 15% of drivers aged 50 or over were shown increases following tickets. The most common increase was either $100 or less, according to the survey numbers.

Of the surveyed individuals, 62% were ticketed for speeding. The largest group had run stops or red lights. Seven percent of the ticketed individuals were cited for careless driving, while 3% were cited for telecommunicating whilst driving. Another 3% were cited for driving drunk, and 58% stated they got a ticket within the past five years, with 25% receiving two infractions. Under 10% had four or more infractions noted on their records.

Adams noted that individuals should attempt to get their ticket expunged from the record, since the repaired record reduces the likelihood of paying more for your insurance.
