Melissa Arseniuk is not leaving her personal dating life to chance. She is a currently paying member of a dating website, and also uses a mobile application “SinglesAroundMe”. She plunged into the activity six months ago after she ended a three-year relationship, noting that the phone application is particularly handy for her efforts.
"I could be at a coffee shop or meeting a girlfriend and she's running late, so I could fire up the app and see who's around," she says. "It's kind of a good supplement to the more traditional Web-based dating sites. It's about exploring all avenues and putting yourself out there."
As the landscape of dating has moved to the virtual realm in the United States over the course of the last decade, the proliferation of dating applications is now taking the efforts to a new level. The apps are remaking an industry that is expected to continue to grow up to $1.2 billion this year. The dating segment is projected to nearly double its revenue over the following five years.
This Valentine's Day, less singles are going to search for love exclusively through their laptops. Just as other industries have seen online traffic and business migrate to mobile devices, the dating industry has been rolling out applications in order to connect, break, and surprise wandering hearts in a slue of different ways.
“I see the industry breaking off into a billion different directions," says Marc Lesnick, founder of iDate, an annual trade show for the online dating industry.
In fact, if you have a specific interest in your courtship prerequisites, chances are there is a dating site that can help. Occupational, diet, gender-friendly, and so many other specific dating sites are now available for anyone to partake in.
"I love the site DateMyPet. The idea is you like pets and I like pets. That's the level it's gone," Lesnick says. "It's everything you can imagine now. That's where it's heading."
