Nielsen and Billboard to Use YouTube Views in Rankings reports Rush Views

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The addition of U.S. YouTube video streaming data will now be included in the Billboard and Nielsen ratings, according to a statement made by the companies. The addition includes an updated methodology for the Billboard Hot 100 for singles released by various artists.

The YouTube streaming data is now to be factored into the chart's ranking, and will thus enhance the formula that includes the Nielsen's tracking of download sales as well as physical singles sales. The terrestrial radio airplay will also still be included, along with on-demand audio streaming, and online radio streaming.

Billboard is now to incorporate the official videos on YouTube that are captured by Nielsen's streaming measurement. That includes the use of Vevo on YouTube, as well as the user-generated clips which utilized authorized audio. The company notes the strategy will further reflect the varying platforms for music consumption that is enjoyed by today's listeners.

"The very definition of what it means to have a hit is ever-changing these days,” says Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director. “The Billboard charts are the ultimate measure of success in music, and they constantly evolve to reflect these new music experiences. When the charts launched over 70 years ago, a hit was defined as selling copies of a single or generating airplay. While those avenues are still viable, one needn't look any further than Cee Lo, Gotye, PSY or now Baauer to know that a song can be a massive hit on YouTube alone."

For this week, the most notable viral sensation has been the “Harlem Shake” which was produced by Baauer. The song debuts at No. 1 with both the Hot 100 and the Stream Songs charts, as well as made a jump from 12 to No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Songs with over 103 million unique views.

According to Nielsen, the song has benefited heavily from the viral-influence, selling 262,000 downloads.
