Back Pain Should Be Seen as Something to Prevent reports Queen West Physio

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Dr. Stuart Weinstein stated that it is not uncommon for senior citizens that find their way to his office to be suffering from rather severe back pain. Now Dr. Weinstein and other doctors now believe that a mixture of awareness and consistent exercise can alleviate back pain from afflicting individuals severely.

"Sometimes seniors don't want to accept back pain just because they're just getting older," says Weinstein, a clinical professor at the University of Washington's Department of Rehabilitative Medicine.

Weinstein and others now look at back pain differently than they may have prior. They urge patients not to look at back pain as 'just part of aging' and instead to look at it as a sign of a physical ailment involving the spine or back that should be addressed.

When it comes to pain, seniors become highly hindered and more sedentary, even at times becoming fearful of their favorite activities going away. Ironically, continuing activities early on in the recognition of back pain can be the key to warding off the progression of the ailment (within reason, of course).

"For any health issue, but particularly back problems, it's easy for seniors to fall into the trap of eliminating daily activities, even not leaving their house," Weinstein says.

The problems that can affect seniors, such as osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and other degenerative plagues of the back are often worsening conditions over time. A recent study noted that 25% of people over the age of 64 complain of back pain, and Weinstein believes that percentage is likely even higher overall.

He notes that anyone, of any age, should focus at least some attention on back health in order to prevent back pain. He emphasizes that to ensure one has a strong back, constant and healthy activities and stretches can help, along with check-ups with doctors, physical therapists, and specialists.
