Russian Search Engine Overtake Bing in Searches Total reports iQuarius Media

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Russian Search Engine Yandex has surpassed Bing in the effort to become second-fiddle to Google when it comes to worldwide search results.

Yandex is a Moscow-based Web crawler that specializes in the recognizing of Cyrillic alphabet and the Russian-language inflections in search queries. Within November and December alone, Yandex users generated over 9.4 billion searches, according to the global search engine market comScore report.

The sheer number of searches pushed the Russian site beyond the Microsoft product, which processed less than 9 billion searches on its sites over the same two-month stretch.

SearchEngingeWatch noted that the latest comScore numbers actually gave a more dire outlook for Bing as a standalone property due to the firm measuring queries on several Microsoft sites. In other words, the auxiliary sites added to Bing's total, and the numbers were actually worse. Bing accounts for 92% of Microsoft's site search queries, and so the flagship engine's two-money talley was likely closer to 8 billion in total. That would place it over 1 billion behind Yandex if it turns out the to be tcase.

The remainder of the comScore list is predictably similar to previous scores. Google is still the global leader with 228.9 billion search queries in the final months of the 2012 year. Baidu were in a second place with 29.1 billion, while Yahoo sites came in third with 17.2 billion. Overall, the global search market was able to reach above 350 billion in for the first time ever when looking at a two-month span, according to research.

The Microsoft sites held the fourth spot in global search engine market for several months in 2012, up until Yandex leapfrogged Redmond. Bing and other Microsoft-affiliated sites, which accounted for 4.58 billion searches in July, with Yandex breathing down their next with 3.51 billion. That began the trend of change and now Yandex has overcome Bing for the first time.
