US Continues to Falter When It Comes to Internet Speed reports Frontier High Speed Internet

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While it is good news that the average internet connection speed is gaining in the United States, there is no doubt that the internet is not what many might assume it to be. The “State of the Internet” report from Akamai's latest survey research shows that the United States is ninth on the list of nations, and is far behind Latvia and the Czech Republic.

The United States also fell to 14 overall when it came to average peak speeds, according to data collected by a Cambridge Massachusetts firm that helps assist websites in accelerating their content delivery.

It is troubling news to many who see the studies repeatedly link faster internet connections to the improvement of economic development and the outcome of education. The degree to which the United States is lagging behind is essentially forgoing opportunities.

The U.S. Averages 7.2 megabits per second, constitutes the reality that those within rural areas, especially low-income try to sustain lives with speeds much lowers. Those very people are the ones who need the faster and more reliable access to information, online tutoring, and online job opportunities more than anyone else.

Within a 2011 study, doubling broadband speeds were shown to increase domestic product by 0.3%, which would added $126 billion to the United State's. The research was conducted by the Ericsson company, consulting firm Arthur D Little, and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.

The news also is unfortunate because faster internet can enable next-generation applications, which can include items that will promote better and more efficient connectivity. This in turn can be appropriate for expediting productivity in the workplace while on the go or from remote locals.

Industry as a whole is better served with faster internet as well, with items like Netflix and Hulu gaining more viewers, while education can be improved upon with live tutors and the likes of Khan Academy for expedient learning.

South Korea continues to be the country “winning the race” when it comes to quality high-speed connectivity. The country has an average connection speed of 14.7 Mbps, according to Akamai. Japan can in at second place with 10.5 Mbps, while Hong Kong's 9 Mbps put the country in third.
