Scientists Continue To Search for Fountain of Youth reports SynRG-Telomerase

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 15, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Anyone who saw the Super Bowl commercial of old people acting like teenagers has likely turned on the idea of extending human lifespan to the point of such a sight occurring. However, that is likely not enough to deter scientists the world over from staying busy in their labs as they attempt to find the elusive 'fountain of youth'.

While scientists may never find a true source of eternal youthfulness, research is now suggesting that even if we cannot live hundreds of years, we may still be able to reverse some of the pangs of aging.

The newest research is showing some ability to reverse the degenerative effects of what scientists call the “normal aging process.” And that news could have many who are reaching the ages of their body slowing dancing in their recliners.

Scientists at two of the largest research institutions in the world have achieved what some are calling a “major advance,” in the search for a way to avoid the ravages of time. The research is being conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, as well as the Harvard institute.

Scientists were reportedly able to make old mice seem young again, and in other cases essentially pick up where nature had stalled in the generating the production of blood cells.

The scientists did so by injecting a longevity gene that appears to reverse the decline that the body experiences due to again.

The scientists have essentially figured out a way to slow again, even repairing its damages, and it may be possible to curb some of the debilitating diseases effects of afflictions like dementia and cancer.

"Our study is really the first one demonstrating that sirtuins (proteins known to regulate aging) can reverse aging-associated degeneration, and I think that's very exciting," Danica Chen, a Berkeley assistant professor of nutritional science and toxicology and coauthor of a study published in Cell Reports, said in releasing the paper. "This opens the door to potential treatments for age-related degenerative diseases."

The research focused specifically on SIRT3, which has been found to play a roll in extending the lifespan in simple organisms like yeast. In all animals the SIRT3 production slows causing slowing in tissue and blood cell development. Sirtuins are proteins that are generated by the very genes that make organisms and determine specific characteristics. When organisms begin to age, the adult cells that are meant to maintain tissue and cells decline. Scientists are hoping their new line of work helps stem the tide of decline and create a positive flux of Sirtuins that help combat the affects of aging that come from such a loss.
