 (EMAILWIRE.COM, February 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Dow Jones Industrial average is the poster boy of the economy in the United States, and the 30 companies that currently comprise the list are some of the most important and influential in the world. Over the years, the market has had its shares of highs and lows, and now FinancialTrading.com has created an infographic showing the largest single-day gains since the inception of the Dow Jones Industrial group.
The infographic shows gains measured in two distinct ways, the percentage gain, and the total points gained in a given day. The largest single-day percentage gain was seen on November 15 of 1933, when the Dow saw a 15.34% increase from open to close. This total eclipsed the previous record of 14.87% gained on October 6, 1931. In fact, many of the highest gains were seen in the early 1930s. One of the highest recent gains came on October 13, 2008, when the market gained 11.08% by close.
FinancialTrading.com shows when it comes to points gained, the modern era holds more of the significant numbers. The largest points gained seen in the Dow's history was on October 11, 2008, when it saw 11.08% of shares gained. Followed by October 28, 2008, which had the most productive day overall of any day, as it had 10.88% of both percentage and points gained. The financial year of 2008 holds 12 of the top 20 points-gained records.
The companies comprising the DJI are some of the most well-known names in business, banking, manufacturing and conglomerations. The oldest member of the list, General Electric, made its appearance in November of 1907. Exxon Mobil and Proctor&Gamble joined the list in 1928 and 1931 respectively. Through the century more companies such as Du Pont, IBM, Merck, and 3M mad their way onto the list. The latest addition is United Health Group, which found its way onto the market on September 24, 2012.
