(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- David Blankenhorn could be considered a former 'important person' in the fight against gay marriage. When California attempt to fight against the ban on gay marriage, he was the lone expert who supported the state's case regarding the '23 harmful consequences on society', first and foremost being the institution of marriage.
Now, it appears that David Blankenhorn has made an about-face, and decided he no longer views the concept of same-sex marriage as a threat against marriage. In fact, he has moved so far away from that concern, that he sees it as a beacon of hope for saving marriage from what he considers an abandonment by the rest of the nation.
In that way, Gay marriage became a conservative cause for the United States, and Mr. Balankenhorn is the now president of a group that is known as The Institute for American Values, which is an institution spearheading to spur support across the political spectrum for those who believe in marriage.
On Wednesday, the group published a piece entitled “Call for a New Conversation on Marriage,” signed by 74 “American leaders,” including the academic and author Francis Fukuyama, and Canada’s own Michael Ignatieff.
There are no clear signs that the fight against gay marriage is slowing, according to Blankenhorn. He also notes that there is no evidence that fighting it has done anything to help marriage in general. Nearly 44% of children born to a woman who hold high-school diplomas but lack college experience were born outside of marriage.
“Marriage is fracturing in America,” says the call for a new conversation. It’s still strong among “college-educated elites,” but “much larger numbers of Americans, particularly in middle- and working-class America, are abandoning the institution entirely.” This hurts children and contributes to the growth of inequality, the institute says.
Blankenhorn's move “to the left” did not come out of nowhere, according to him. He examined the evidence, and decided that gay marriage fits the American values system.
