Married Persons More Likely To Live Past Midlife reports G and D Weddings

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study, being married can be the key to not dying young, and improves chances of surviving the middle-age years, according to some scientists.

Persons who have never married were nearly three times more likely to die young, when compared to those who had been in a stable marriage throughout their adult life, U.S. Researchers found.

This research suggests that not having a spouse in midlife have in fact increase the chances of dying during those years.

According to the research, being single after forty, or losing a partner without marrying again, increased the overall risk of early death during the middle age, as well as severely undercut the chances of reaching 60 years old.

Even when considering risky health behaviors such as alcohol or tobacco intake, those who were married were still more likely to outlive their single contemporaries by 230%.

The study was carried out by Dr. Ilene Siegler and her colleagues from the department of Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina.

Siegler stated “‘In sum, having a partner during middle age is protective. Being single or losing a partner without replacement are the situations that increase mortality risk during middle age and decrease the probability that one will survive to be elderly.”

“New research on chronic loneliness may provide a partial explanation for our findings’ she added.

Dr. Siegler noted that living to an old age is expected, especially for individuals who have already made it to 40. That is precisely why it is important to understand the tendency for single individuals not to make it to the autumn years.

The research looked at 4,802 individuals who took part in the University of North Carolina Alumni Heart Study, which was ongoing for those born in the 1940s.

The research took note of the stability and change in patterns of marital and nonmarital status during midlife, and the effect of personality traits during teen years, as well as the socioeconomic status and appropriate health-risk behavior. There were 238 deaths that were reported, with a mere 32 of them being women. Researchers noted that those who never married were at highest risk of death.

In fact they were almost three times as likely to pass before reading their elder years.
