(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Live blogging has become hugely popular. A new survey has shown that the use of live blogging is gaining 300% more views and over 200% more visitors than the conventional online articles that are on the same subject.
When it comes to online picture galleries, live blogging is ahead by 219% more visitors, according to the research gathered by the City University of London.
Live blogging provides commentary and analysis along the news rather than summarizing the event post-act. It is a transparent form in which a writer is able to update and amend commentary in a quick and simple digestible paragraph form.
The blogging that takes place is being utilized by many online news outlets as they cover breaking news stories. Events such as the United States' presidential election are prime candidates for live-blogging delights. The system is also highly useful for sporting events or wartime journalism.
The research shows that the style's transparent, nearly-conversational capability, holds an appeal with readers. The information feels more objective and more engaging.
There is something to be said for the convenience of the art as well. Online readers are afforded the opportunity to follow unfolding stories. Readers are also highly aware of the fact the information is extremely up to date. Those readers are examples of something that has becoming increasingly important in the modern age of instant news gratification.
According to Dr. Neil Thurman and Anna Walter, who headed the research: "We believe live blogs are so popular because they meet readers' changing news consumption preferences," says Thurman. "More and more news is being consumed at work, in the office.”
"Live blogs provide this 'news-at-work' audience with what they're looking for: regular follow-up information on breaking news in 'bite-sized nuggets' which they can read - as several readers told us - while they are supposed to be working."
The Thurman-Walters study is the first true survey on the subject.
The conductors of the survey studied how live blogs are constructed, along with how they worked. The noted that live blogging journalism works fast, publishing updates every 20 minutes for nearly six hours straight at times. There is little time for fact checking due to the pace, but few seem concerned with that fact.
Readers also seem to believe that live blogs are “more factual” and less opinionated, and Thurman notes that it may be because “the looser culture of collaboration is offset by live blogs' use of a relatively large number of sources, and transparent citation and correction practices."
Another important factor of live-blogging is that the readers are not passive, and comment regularly. This may be exactly why there is a growing interest in the media type.
There is a twitter element to the style as well. The research reported that live bloggers are three times as likely to interact with reader tweets rather than the comments that are added to the blogs.
