• Look at the hot water heater and make sure that the temperature is not higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is, it could cause burns or it could reduce the unit's energy consumption. If one determines that the temperature is too high, it should be adjusted immediately to avoid any of these issues.
• Make sure to have someone check on the home if one plans to be away on vacation for longer than a few days. Plumbing problems can cause massive water damage, and the longer they're a problem, the worse the results will be. Having someone drop by and check the place out can prevent the worst from happening.
• If there is a lot of hair in the shower drain, be sure to get a stopper and put it in the drain. This will catch the hair from going down the drain, which can clog it. Just make sure that you remove hair that is already in the drain before using the stopper.
• Garbage disposals are a common cause of plumbing problems, which is an easy problem to solve. Don't just put everything down the disposal or treat it like a second trash can. Use the disposal things that would be difficult to dispose of normally. Putting all leftover food down the sink is a good way to produce clogs.
• When leaving on vacation or leaving your vacation home, be sure to turn off the main water before you leave. If something happens while away it can cause some serious damage from a flooded basement or a broken pipe in the wall that leaks for weeks until you return.
• Got a leaky pipe? In many cases one can repair this oneself. If a joint is leaking, tighten it with a pipe wrench. If the leak is coming from a damaged section of pipe, one can try repairing it with a store-bought patching kit. One method involves applying waterproof tape to the section of pipe where there is leakage. Before applying the tape, make sure the pipe is thoroughly dry. Make sure that the tape covers two to three inches on either side of the breakage in the pipe. This should only be a temporary fix.
