(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 28, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The National Basketball Association, along with clothing partner adidas, announced on November 12 that the 10 teams playing on Christmas Day would be wearing new uniforms.
The new uniforms, dubbed "BIG Color," feature a singular team color, with no stripes or other applications mixed with another color, giving the uniform a colorful albeit simple looks.
All five games being played in the NBA on Christmas Day will be televised by either ABC or ESPN and include some of the most recognized teams in the league. They include: Boston Celtics at Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks at Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat, Houston Rockets at Chicago Bulls, and Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers.
In previous years, league games played on Christmas Day have had high viewership levels and the league expects nothing less this year as well. Last year, Christmas Day NBA games reached nearly 35 million unique viewers.
"We worked with adidas to amplify our long-standing tradition of playing on Christmas Day," said Sal LaRocca, NBA Executive Vice President Global Merchandising. "BIG Color gives our players an enhanced look on the court and highlights one of the most visible dates during our season with a new and exciting range of products."
The players are excited by the new look of the uniforms.
"I grew up watching games on Christmas Day, and it's a huge honor to have your team play in front of millions around the world," said Dwight Howard, center for the Lakers. "I'm excited to wear these BIG Color uniforms that bring style and flare to the court."
Although the players won't wear the new uniforms, which are part of the adidas Winter Court Collection, until December 25, they have been on sale to the public since November 15 at online and brick-and-mortar retailers. Other items that are being sold related to the new color scheme include shoot-around shorts and warm-up jackets.
Although only 10 teams playing on Christmas Day will wear the new uniforms, the new apparel is available for all 30 NBA teams. As of publication date, Adult BIG Color jerseys retail for $89.99 while youth sizes retail for $59.99. Fans can purchase the Winter Court Collection at the NBA Store in New York City, Champs Sports locations nationwide, various team retailers, and at NBA Store.
