Team Believes to Have Mapped Out Aging Process in Mice reports Synrg Telomerase

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 14, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Scientists in Hong Kong believe they have mapped the formula that will delay the aging process. The initial test was handled in mice, and the researchers hope to replicate it in humans.

The finding was published in the December issue of Cell Metabolism, and builds on the work handled in 2005, which shed light on progeria (premature aging).

Progeria is an obvious in appearance of children before the child reaches a year old. Although the children's mental faculties are normal, they stop growing, lose body fat, and often suffer from wrinkled skin and hair loss. The symptoms are akin to what aging people go through, and include stiff joints and a buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can then lead to heart disease and stroke. Most of the individuals diagnosed with Progeria die before the age of 20 years.

In the new research, the University of Hong Kong team discovered that the mutation of the Lamin A protein, which lines the nucleus of the human cell, disrupts the normal repairing process of the cells, which leads to the accelerated aging.

Conversely, the work uses both mice and experiments in petri dishes, which found that the normal Lamin A binds and then activates SIRT1.

"We can develop drugs that mimic Lamin A or increase the binding between Lamin A and SIRT1," Liu Baohua, research assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Hong Kong, told a news conference on Thursday.

Associate professor Zhou Zhongjun stated that healthy mice who were fed concentrated resveratrol fared much better than the mice not given the compound.

"We actually delayed the onset of aging and extended the healthy lifespan," Zhou said of the mice.

A 30% increase was seen in mice when they were fed resveratrol, compared with progeria mice.

When asked if he believed red wine has any delaying effect on again, Zhou stated: "The amount of resveratrol in red wine is very low and it may not be beneficial. But the alcohol will cause damage to the body."
