Cuba Entering the 21st Century in Regards to Connectivity reports Satellite Internet Broadband

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The economic reforms brought forth by the Cuban government must be ready to take into account the array of opportunities that are offered by the internet. The platform is key to the dominant economic model around the globe, according to the interviews with both experts and the average joe on the street.

"It is not an option for our future development, itÂ’s an imperative of our time," economist Ricardo Torres told IPS. "Without the mass application of the New Information and Communications Technologies (NICT), to production processes and social life, there are no contemporary possibilities of development."

Simultaneously, people who participate in the interactive section of Cafe 108, the website for the IPS office within the country, felt that the mass access of the web means, “Finally entering the century 21” as well as more opportunities for employment with the expansion of state enterprises and private businesses alike.

The NICT, and especially the internet issue, is a complicated one for the Cubans due to the political and financial concerns that plague the country. In particular are the more than 50-year old conflict between Havana and Washington.

The expansion of global interest in the internet since the 1990s happened as Cuba entered a devastating financial crisis that persists currently. The plummet in its economic standing came after the fall of the Soviet Union and the European socialist bloc, which was Cuba's largest trading partner.

According to Torres, CubaÂ’s "unique socioeconomic and geopolitical situation" meant that "not enough resources have been earmarked for the development and use of these technologies". The U.S. Instituted covert delivery of mobile phones, computers, and internet connections that have been regarded by Cuba as a meddling in its internal affairs.

Just last year, a fiber-optic submarine cable arrive to Cuba's coastline, thanks to a project with Havana and Caracas, which granted greater independence in communications between the Caribbean and Central America. In May of 2012, Jorge Arreaza, the Venezuelan Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, told reporters that the cable was fully operational.

Cuba now enjoys a minimum bandwidth of 323 megabytes per second, which is the allowable capacity by satellite. The fiber optic cable will increase transmissions by nearly 3,000 times according to authorities, while cutting operating costs by 25%. Satellite services will still be available as well.
