FCC Laxing Regulations for Onboard Internet reports Satellite Internet Broadband

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The United States Federal Communications Commission is set to ease its general restrictions on internet use in commercial airlines. The move comes as an attempt to help the speed of deployment of Internet Services for on board aircraft.

The FCC's planning to update the entirety of the system and streamline regulatory requirements across the entirety of the agency. This will be accomplished by formalizing the rule-set on how Earth Stations Abroad Aircraft (ESAA) communicate with Fixed Satellites Services (FSS) geostationary-orbit (GSO) space stations.

The ESAA has licensed applications in the FSS and the move will be establishing a regulatory outlines for process applications. All this, while ensuring other radio services are protected from interference that could compromise both flight and ground options over various channels.

The satellite antenna carries the signal and to and from the aircraft, and is mounted on the exterior of the craft. It provides a two-way in-flight broadband service to passengers, as well as flight crew.

Two mobile applications in the FSS, Earth Stations on board Vessels (ESV) as well as Vehicle-Mounted Earth Stations (VMES) provided satellite communications. ESSA is the final third of multiple applications in the FSS. The antenna will carry a signal both two and from the aircraft, while mobile technologies like WiFi will lend communication capability within the hull of the craft.

This latest move by the FCC means that rather than worrying about license on-board systems in an ad hoc capacity, airlines will be capable to test their systems that meet FCC standards and practices. The companies can then establish that they do not interfere with systems of the aircraft and secure approval from the Federal Aviation Administration approval.

“By reducing administrative burdens on both applicants and the Commission, the new rules should allow the Commission to process ESAA applications up to 50 per cent faster, enhancing competition in an important sector of the mobile telecommunications market in the United States and promoting the widespread availability of Internet access to aircraft passengers,” an FCC statement explained.
