(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) New York, NY -- In a recent study developed by Dr. Dosme Gay Escoda, professor at the Department of Dentistry and Stomatology of the Faculty of Dentistry of the UB, having proper dental health may help stay the effects of muscle injury.
The study was conducted by Dr. Escoda, along with researchers of the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research. And was supported by the FC Barcelona medical services. The work was published in the 2011 Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal, and was an article about sports medicine that is most consulted by BioMedLib Journal, according to the ranking developed by the publication.
Over the course of three seasons, 2003 to 2006, the scientific team studied dental trauma, as well as oral hygiene and other factors of thirty professional players that belonged to the FC Barcelona soccer team. The findings were contrasted to the data provided by the Barcelona medical services regarding the injuries suffered by the players.
Conclusions of the study showed a correlation of oral health and its relation to sports lesion incidents. That translates to stating that professional players who have worse oral health, also are more likely to suffer injury. Oral infections stem from caries, gingivitis, and dental plaque.
The study expressed the importance of proper dental health as a preventative measure to muscular injuries caused by intrinsic factors. Mount infections secrete chemical mediators through the bloodstream, which damage muscles and weaken them. Such weakening can increase risk of suffering lesions, according to experts.
It is estimated that professional soccer players are injured 1.5 to 7 times every 1,000 hours of training, and between 12 and 35 times every 1,000 match hours. When it comes to muscular, tendon, and ligament injury, which are suffered most frequently in sports training, it is clear that oral health is important. “There is an oral health periodical revision to players in order to ensure an excellent physical condition of high-level sport players”, concluded Dr Gay Escoda.
