(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) New York, NY -- Local orthodontist Dr. Stephen Fisher was able to rouse some smiles in the city of Xian, China, with a team of 15 American dental practitioners who have traveled to the region in order to examine children and learn from their peers to the east.
Fisher is the only Northeastern delegate to take part in the International People to People citizen Ambassador Program. He did his best to disperse knowledge and make recommendations to parents who accompanied their children for check-ups with the American dentists.
"The parents who were there seemed happy to have information on how they can help their children," said Fisher.
"I saw them just like I would see any patient in Park Ridge or Oradell," noted Fisher. "I looked to my left and I looked to my right and we were all so happy to be treating the kids."
The the assistance of trusty tongue blades and mirrors, the team was able to complete inspections of over 300 children in two hours.
"Every child I examined needed help in some way," said Fisher, citing several cases of tooth decay and early tooth loss.
If children are unfortunate enough to lose their teeth too early, it is like being in a shopping line, teeth much up just like those people in the line, toward the open spot, according to Fisher. "Or if you are in a packed elevator and people step out, you tend to drift into the empty spaces," said Fisher.
Teeth can drift, and cause crowding, or cause teeth to tip or lose their position.
International People to People Citizen Ambassador Program, which was started in the 1950s, has been part of Fisher's like since he first heard about it 15 years ago.
"I said, finally, let's do it," said Fisher.
On the final day, Fisher participated in the 14th International Joint Symposium on craniofacial growth and development, which was held in conjunction with the 11 th Chinese National Orthodontic Meeting.
"You get to meet your fellow professionals and you get to see different ways of practicing orthodontic dentistry," noted Fisher.
