Seniors' Group Says Elderly Face Discrimination in Finding Auto Insurance reports California Car Auto Insurance

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 12, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Despite an agreement between the British government and insurance companies and agents, a British seniors group charges older drivers face discrimination in obtaining auto insurance.

Alan Patchett, the director of the seniors group Age UK chapter in the northeastern English city of Sunderland, pointed to research indicating older persons still face bias in their attempts to purchase car insurance. A “mystery shopper” study found drivers age 80 and up are not even offered a quote or a telephone referral when they inquire about auto insurance.

Patchett says that seniors are not being well-served by the auto insurance industry, despite an agreement between the UK government and two insurance groups, Association of British Insurers, which includes nearly every insurance company in England, and the British Insurance BrokersÂ’ Association, which represents insurance agents.

At the time the agreement was reached, UK Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Theresa May hailed it as a concrete step to aid older people find insurance and bring greater transparency to how insurance decisions are made. She termed the agreement “a great example of businesses working with government to tackle discrimination.”

Under the agreement, insurance firms in ABI agreed as a condition of membership to “signpost,” or call to the attention of an alternative insurance provider, any applicant they deny coverage to due to age. The agents group maintains a “Find A Broker” service, including a website, which would satisfy the “signpost” requirement. ABI also agreed to publish annual data on claims aggregated by age. The agreement took effect in April this year.

When the agreement was announced, the insurance industry group noted its research indicated 41% of drivers in their late 60s prefer using a website to get quotes and information on insurance, 75% of shoppers aged 75 and above prefer to use the phone. ABI, whose 400 members represent about 94% of British insurance companies, said it would work to find the best way to communicate with older insurance shoppers.

Patchett said, however, research done by Age UK found 85% of persons aged 80 and up seeking auto insurance did not in fact receive a referral, as called for in the agreement. In fact, 21% of elderly “mystery shoppers” were given neither a quote for the insurance nor a referral. Although it is vitally important for seniors to have appropriate insurance coverage, he notes, “Unfortunately our survey has found that this unacceptable discrimination still exists.”

Age UK itself offers insurance, with no hidden charges or upper age limits, through Ageas Insurance Limited, last year named "General Insurer of the year" at the British Insurance Awards.
