Study Finds Walking Distances Have Been Halved Since 1970s reports YouÂ’re Not Stupid

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 04, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- There is a 'silent epidemic' that is causing thousands to die early from heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, according to studies; that epidemic is a lack of physical activity.

The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published its new guidance aimed to pushing for councils, schools, and business to help individuals understand the importance of being active.

Organizations must encourage individuals to walk, cycle, or be otherwise aerobically active ,in hopes of becoming a healthier nation. Experts from NICE note that this is important not only for the individual, but also for the nation, which will see a significant rise in financial burden due to an aging populous.

Nanetter Mutrie, a professor of exercise and sports psychology, stated that Britain was facing “a glut of inactivity”.

The problem with being inactive is that it is the gateway to many health risks, which can cause premature death. According to Mutrie, inactivity is the fourth leading cause of premature death worldwide, after high blood pressure, smoking, and raised blood sugar levels.

The largest problem, according to Mutrie, was that the inactivity problemas “probably not recognized by most people”. She continue “In the past decade we have lost about 80 mile per person per year in terms of walking for transport,” she said.

In the 1990s, a census clocked about 250 miles of walking per year, but by 2008, that number had dropped to 170.

A more intensive look into the data showed that since 1975, the proportion of journey taken by food was cut in half. Currently, a fifth of all car journey cover less than a mile.

Dr. harry Rutter of the National Obesity Observatory, who worked on the NICE research, noted that “only a minority” of Brits got enough exercise.

Said Dr. Rutter: “Many of us feel we don't have the time or the inclination to add regular physical activity into our lives - it can be very difficult to break old habits and change behavior. But walking and cycling to work, to school, to the shops or elsewhere can make a huge difference."

Rutter indicated that many things must change to get people staying more active. Creating more accessible and readily prepared biking paths, for instance, could increase individuals interest in biking to closer locals.
