(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The rate of obesity in California will jump from 24% to 46%. The doubling of weight can also mean a hefty increase on the health care that is necessary. If the state can find a way to curb the appetite, there could be an estimated $82 billion that could be saved in the next 20 years.
“Obesity is related to a number of cancers including ovarian and gastrointestinal cancer and it is also linked to heart disease, diabetes and stroke” Says Wayne Smith, Chief of the department of physical medicine at Kaiser Hospital San Jose.
The chemical BPA, or Bisphenol A, seems to be a noted culprit. Researches at New York University School of Medicine noted children with high levels of BPA concentrations were twice as likely to be obese.
“We were struck by the fact the association was so strong” said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, who lead the study.
The American Chemistry Council weighed in, saying alternate research suggests that it is unlikely BPA could cause health effects at any notable level. The reason being how the body processes chemical.
Smith stated that people generally need to focus more on helping children grow in a healthy manner as a first line of defense against obesity.
“The next time you get a craving , drink a glass of water and take a walk around the block.”
