Ford Transit Platform Credited With Invigorating National RV Sales

(CityRegions.Com, July 03, 2017 ) Las Vegas, NV -- Already an international leader in cutting-edge automotive innovations, Ford Motor Company is now being credited with invigorating RV sales in the United States.

Winnebago's Fuse and Paseo are the two latest vehicles built on the Ford Transit platform, and these van-based RVs are poised to become the fastest-growing segment in the motorhome industry for 2017.

Winnebago Product Manager Russ Garfin makes no bones about Ford's influence in fueling customer demand for the vehicles.

“Our customers have responded incredibly well to the new Transit platform,” he said. “They love the driveability and the smooth ride, and the feedback on both of the engines we use – the EcoBoost® gas and five-cylinder diesel – has been great.”

Ford Country finds symmetry in acclaim

The acclaim was welcomed by, though came not completely unexpected to Brad Cambridge, general manager of Ford Country. He views it as more reinforcement of Ford's position as an industry leader in manufacturing hybrid and electrified vehicles as well as its selection this year as the most trusted car and SUV brand in America by 4,500 readers of Reader's Digest.

“Those readers said they chose Ford because of the quality, value and reliability of our vehicles,” Cambridge said. “Now, so has Winnebago.”

Ford platform supports two popular Winnebago vehicles

Through February 2017, RV shipments totaled 73,287 – an increase of 8.6 percent over the same period in 2016, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. These numbers portend a record-breaking 2017: in 2016, RV shipments totaled 430,691 – an increase of just over 15 percent from 2015. From 2014 to 2015, the industry experienced only a 5 percent increase, the association reports.

Winnebago customers have been gravitating to the Fuse and Paseo in almost equal measure. The former features a dual-rear-wheel Transit van cutaway chassis for a 24-foot Class C RV with a bathroom, kitchen and slideout. It comfortably sleeps four adults. The Paseo is a high-roof, extended-length Class B RV featuring a full bathroom and kitchen with refrigerator. It can accommodate two adults.

“With low fuel costs and people’s desire to disconnect and get away from it all, we expect sales of Transit-based motorhomes will continue to grow,” Garfin said.

So too might the three Ford Transits: the Transit, Transit Connect and Transit Connect Passenger Wagon.

The Ford Transit

Billed as “a big van for big jobs,” the Ford Transit is available in two wheelbases, three body lengths and three roof heights. Customers can upfit the Transit to suit their interior needs, with a choice of storage cabinets, dividers, drawers, shelving and rack systems. It features three engine choices:

• The standard 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6

• The 3.2-liter Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel

• The 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost® V6

The Ford Transit Connect

The Transit Connect is smaller, but it's a go-to choice among many American delivery, painting, electric, plumbing, carpet sales and catering companies, who can choose between either 103.9 cubic feet of or 128.6 cubic feet of storage space. It features two engine choices:

• The standard 2.5-liter Duratec® I-4 engine that delivers 169 horsepower

• The 1.6-liter EcoBoost® I-4 gas engine that delivers 178 horsepower

The Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon

The “personal people mover”, the Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon, can seat either five or seven people, depending on the wheel base. For customers who must haul cargo instead of people, the shorter wheelbase features 77.1 cubic feet of storage space behind the front seats while the longer base includes 104.2 cubic feet. The passenger wagon comes with a choice of two engines:

• The 2.5-liter Duratec® I-4 engine that delivers 169 horsepower

• The 1.6-liter EcoBoost® I-4 gas engine that delivers 178 horsepower
