Plans for Garage Have Dwindled in Downtown reports King David Garage Door

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The ones backed plans to build a parking garage in the downtown area have gone from noticeable to dormant, and nearly at the point of outright dismissal.

Lack of funding appears to be the largest obstacle in the way of the project, and its status is now not being actively pursued by the regional or municipal leaders. The project has also shrunk considerably, making it a near-certainty that it will fall to the wayside.

Joseph Costanzo, who works as administrator for the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority, stated that the lacking of funds has seen the project fall out of its active phase.

“Federal funds do not appear available,” said Costanzo. “Perhaps we can put the pieces together, but at this point the lack of money is a big stumbling point.”

The project has been a long-time coming, as many saw use for a parking garage at the corner of Merrimac and Titcomb street. Almost one full decade ago, the City Council was within a single vote of approval for the garage. One vote shy of a 300 car garage is still one vote too little.

In 2010, the MVRTA attempted to bolster the projects appeal with an ambitious plan for a garage that bridged over Titcomb.

One sector of the garage was meant to be operated by the authority, while the other was for hosting vehicles of residents, as well as visitors. Storefront were considered along the Merrimac side.

Sketches for the architectural design had been developed and public meetings had been held to discuss the logistics of the bridge. The mayor and City Council even approved the garage's concept, but without putting any money towards it, given the lack of funds.

Since 2010, plans have remained at a standstill and within MVRTA's books, and with ever-diminishing presence. The size of the project has fallen to less than 100 spaces to park in, and only occupies the lots that rest on the east side of Titcomb Street.
