(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The increase in pitch charges will likely drive ice cream sellers away from the Abington Park, according to businesses.
Northampton Borough Council wishes to place a fee for sites in the Park Avenue south area from £700 per year to £3,500 per year. Those fees are based on wanting the ability to sell on every weekend, plus weekend fees.
As of now, two ice cream vans customers at the roadside, but the new implementation would have them become 'premium' spots.
Also Gallone, the director of the Gallone's ice cream company that has used a pitch for the last 70 year, stated:
“You only have to look at the empty town center units to see what happens when rates get too high. It’s the same principle for pitches. We’re there because the council does not provide its own service and people want to buy what we sell. If fees go up in line with inflation, then you would have to say fair enough. But anything more than that will impact on customers.”
Gallone said that the fee was likely to force prices up to cover the increase in fees.
On April of 2013, Park Avenue South's seven-day-weekend fees will increase “You only have to look at the empty town center units to see what happens when rates get too high. It’s the same principle for pitches. We’re there because the council does not provide its own service and people want to buy what we sell. If fees go up in line with inflation, then you would have to say fair enough. But anything more than that will impact on customers.”
Starting April of this year, Parke Avenue South's seven-day-week fees will increase to £2,100 followed by the £2,800 the next year, and £3,500 in 2015.That is, unless someone steps in to overturn them.
The fee concept has gone out the committee, but the council already is concerned with any attempt to increase fees, as it may pose too much of a challenge for vendors, and may not be in line with other trading zones in the town.
A report released by the borough council licensing committee stated: “Not increasing the fees now may result in the council falling lower in future comparable reports, creating a bigger differential in the future to bring fees in line with other authorities.”
