Fake Braces are New Asian Trend reports Bronsky Orthodontics

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2013 ) New York, NY -- While rappers brought jewelry to a new level with the “grills” that were 'blinged' with diamond encrusted golden mouthpieces, the newest trend in mouthwear that is taking over teenagers in Southeast Asia is fake braces.

Orthodontic braces that are historically used to realign teeth can cost nearly $1,200 in thailand, and are considered a premium in luxury for the privileged. However, in countries where a majority of families must make due with very little, braces are becoming more of a status symbol.

In an attempt to get ahead, more fashion-conscious teenagers have begun to utilize fake braces. The new trend are valued at as little as $100 and are made in attractive designs including “Hello Kitty” and “Micky Mouse” themes.

The trend in Asia may seem like a useful alternative to the less privileged, experts state that the trend can actually be a health hazard, even deadly. While orthodontic braces are inserted by dentists and medical professionals, the fake versions are accessible everywhere, including beauty salons. There are even do-it-yourself kits that one can order online.

The fake braces installed by the untrained facilities have led to a rise in the number of alarming health reports. Fake fashion braces easily slip and slide into a person's throat. The unsuitable metals can cause sores on the gums as well, which may lead to infections or other complications.

Thus far, Vice UK has reported that the trend has been linked to two teenage deaths in Thailand, including 17-year-old Khon Kaen, who suffered heart failure that was caused due to a thyroid infection. A second incident was reported following the health of a 14-year-old girl's death.

The government warnings across Asia that have been issued are hoping to curb the fashion movement.
The teenagers are not the only ones being enticed to put on the fake braces. Adults who wish to show a more prominent standing are also using the mouthpieces to establish being well off.
