(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 16, 2012 ) Copperopolis, CA -- The Canadian government, led by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews is considering loosening some of the restrictions on the ownership and sale of certain firearms.
Among the recommendations proposed by the Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee is the lengthening of gun owner's licenses to 10 years, double what the current laws require. Additionally, certain firearms that are currently prohibited would be reclassified as restricted, such as certain small handguns and full-bore assault rifles, making them easier to sell or transfer ownership.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police expressed concerns over the extension of gun licenses because it would make it more difficult to monitor owners' emotional and mental fitness to own guns.
The Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee, led by Canadian Shooting Sports Association co-chairman Steve Torino, met with Toews and other government officials in Ottawa in March immediately before the Senate approved the registration of long guns, such as rifles.
Other recommendations by the committee being considered includes removal of the requirement on gun owners to get an "authorization to transport" firearms, as well as making seized firearms legally available for public sale or trade. By law, seized weapons currently must be destroyed. They also suggested that a "prohibited persons registry" should be set up to aid in tracking those who should not be allowed to possess guns.
This latest push for looser firearms restriction comes around the 23rd anniversary of the shootings at Montreal's Polytechnic School that resulted in the deaths of 14 female students.
New Democrat Leader Tom Mulcair denounced the proposed changes. "Gun control in this country will soon be merely symbolic," Mulcair said.
Former Ontario attorney-general Michael Bryant, representing the Coalition for Gun Control, said that the proposed changes are "just chilling. I think Canadians should be frightened by this," Bryant said.
Officials with the public safety minister's office said that Toews is actively considering the recommendation, especially the lengthening of firearm licenses.
