10-Year-Old California Girl Closes in on Weight Goal through Dedication reports Look Cut

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 12, 2012 ) Irvine, CA -- Breanna Bond was always a big girl. When she was a year old, she weighed 25 pounds. As a result, her parents were obviously concerned but were told by her pediatrician that Breanna would grow into it.

Breanna did grow into it. By age nine, she had reached a top weight of 186 pounds, putting among the 12.5 million children between the ages of two and 19 that the Centers for disease Control and Prevention says are obese.

Breanna's mom, Heidi tried everything to get her daughter to lose weight, but she just kept getting heavier.

The family, who resides in Clovis, Calif. ate healthy for the most part, keeping relatively few high-calorie foods, such as fast food, soda or sugary treats, as part of their daily routine. However, large meals at home, combined with a lack of physical activity and the junk food her daughter was able to purchase at school continued to cause her weight to increase.

Her parents hired a nutritionist, but could not get their daughter to stick to a healthy diet. They brought in a psychologist and an endocrinologist, who both deemed that Breanna was a normal child. Breanna even joined a dance class and a swim team, but continued to put on weight.

"Kids teased me," Breanna says. "They called me chubby and fatty-o."

"It was horrible for me and my husband," Bond remembers. "We felt helpless. We honestly didn't know what to do."

The family began to make exercise a regular activity, starting slowly with walks. They started off by walking four miles per day four times per week.

Initially, it was a struggle to keep Breanna interested. Heidi pushed her daughter harder, encouraging her complete the four-mile loop, reminding her that she had already lost some weight (at that point 13 pounds), but sometimes, it wouldn't work, and Breanna would turn for home.

However, as more progress began to be seen, the more Breanna started to enjoy the program. She began to add other activities such as jumping on a trampoline, to her exercise routine.

As a result of the increased exercise and development of healthier eating habits, Breanna is now down to 121 pounds. That places her six pounds from her 115lbs weight goal.

Breanna told her friends about her weight loss plan and has even inspired others. One friend joined her on her workouts during the summer and lost 20 pounds.

"I was inspiring," said Breanna, whose confidence has soared as she no longer gets teased at school.

"It's changed her whole life," Heidi said. "She's able to be a kid for the first time."
