AARP Getting Into the Dating Scene reports Its Charming Time

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- It turns out that the latest trend in online dating: Is going offline as quickly as possible.

While most dating sites have focused on helping singles find time to be acquainted with online communication prior to face-to-face meetings, it appears the reverse is now preferred. A growing number of sites now cater to helping users set up offline activities in order to size one another up and consider general physical chemistry.

It appears that nearly everyone is getting into the act, even the AARP.

The nonprofit, best known for its lobbying work on behalf of the 50+ crowd, has been trying to recreates its identity in order to appeal to the younger portion of its constituency. That portion adds up to 37 million members that are single, half of whom are single and under 70, according to AARP.

The organization thus has set forth plan to launch its own dating service. In a new partnership with an up-and-coming site titled HowAboutWe.com, the company will attempt to solicit ideas for interest dates, and then connect partners who have the most similar likes according to the possible suggestions. The company's traffic jumped 221% within the last year, says ComScore.com

"The core idea was to build an offline dating site that made it easy for people to say what they want to do for a date, connect and get offline," says Brian Schechter, 33, co-founder and co-CEO of HowAboutWe, which launched two years ago.

Though he recently turned 50, and is not an AARP member, Ken Nicholas signed up for HowAboutWe last fall because he “liked the premise of taking it offline.”

His date suggestion: "How about we start with coffee and end with wine. Add some art or culture in between and it could be fun." That got him a few dates, including one woman he's seen several times since.

Older sites such as Match.com, as well as newer sites like DinnerDate, CupidRadar, and Grouper, all have focused on the importance of connections offline that cannot happen through the technological country. This retro concept of dating was most evident with Grouper, wherein individuals organize something like a group date of friends to go along. In an ironic twist, the young singles who are most immersed in technology seem to be the most interested in the face-to-face movement.

"People of my generation, in our 20s, think a one-on-one date — especially a blind date — can be a lot of pressure. We've found most of our relationships — whether romantic relationships or just friends — happen a little more organically. We don't like to even call them dates," says Michael Waxman, 26, co-founder and CEO of Grouper, which launched last year in New York.

The AARP will not have a clear shot at the older-singles market. The OurTime community, which will include OurTime.com, SenirosMeet, com, and SeniorPeopleMeet.com, has nearly 4 million members. Match.com bought up the group in 2009.
