Click Frenzy Advertisers Cope With Crash reports Shamrock Hosting Site

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 06, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The buzz created by the countryÂ’s first national online sales event may have been too much of a good thing.

Click Frenzy was due to open yesterday, but crashed when 2 million visitors proved too much for the websiteÂ’s servers. The service has been available sporadically today.

As a result, some advertisers are extending their sales another 24 hours.

Click Frenzy organizer Grant Arnott, of the Power Retail industry group, told morning television show audiences that he was sorry about the “tsunami of traffic” and subsequent outage. The outage was something he was not prepared for.

“What happened come 7 p.m., we had a couple of million users trying to query the site at the same time,’’ he told Channel 9’s Today Show. “We had geared up for 1 million users.”

A shopping event prospectus indicates the website promised retailers it had “serious hosting firepower and e-commerce capability to manage incredible traffic numbers.”

The group charged participating retailers up to $33,000 for a banner ad or four “premium” ads and $1,650 for listing one deal.

"Click Frenzy still has a number of hours to go and we will review it after the event," said Myer department store spokeswoman Jo Lynch.

Despite the Click Frenzy crash, Lynch said her company experienced its “biggest online sales day ever.”

Catalina Romano, spokeswoman for online retailer The Iconic, said her company felt “bad for customers” caught up in the Click Frenzy failure, and, as a result, extended its 30% off sale by one day. She added that The Iconic would talk to Click Frenzy about a refund. “We’re definitely going to look at it,’’ she said. “This could have damaged our brand as well. There’s a conversation to be had this morning between our media guys and Click Frenzy.’’

Ruslan Kogan, who founded the company Kogan, said his company had planned to participate in Click Frenzy, but changed its mind after the organizer demanded “thousands of dollars.”
“I feel sorry for retailers who did pay them,’’ Kogan said. “Every single retail who paid them for a listing will be disappointed. It’s like paying to advertise in the Daily Telegraph and then the Daily Telegraph deciding not to print the newspaper that day. Why do you need to pay someone to advertise bargains? It’s not like they’re Google and they’re getting 10 million visitors a day.”

Click Frenzy web hosts Ultra Serve tweeted that the portal had “huge volumes of traffic as expected” at launch and added the site was “working great” despite complaints.

OrionVM Managing Director Sheng Yeo, however, said Sydney servers were obviously overwhelmed and it was “obvious that traffic far exceeded expectation.” Still, he added the group should have done more “load testing” prior to launching the site.

The event may have indirectly benefited non-participating online retailers as well, with many reporting high sales that day. Kogan saw more than 200,000 unique visitors, The Iconic reported “record sales,” and daily deals website Catch of the Day reported 1.5 million visitors to the site.
