(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 06, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A local newspaper is reporting that a 25-year-old from Gabriola Island British Columbia is facing fraud charges, stemming from an operation run out of Whistler. The scam apparently involved sending out phony invoices for web-hosting services.
The Whistler Sergeant Steve LeClair reported to newspapers that since September, the office of Canadian federal law enforcement group has been investigating the scam. Said scam involved over 1,000 invoices sent out by a “Enterprise Corporate Web Hosting, for “work not performed”. The Sgt. Stated that the asking amounts were ranging from anyone from $130 to $155.
The overall costs could be as much as $150,000, and while there is no information of the overall response to the invoices, it is likely that it was not 100%. Thus, the tally is likely lower than the possible maximum.
Sgt. LeClair stated that “it is believed companies received invoices from this suspect and many people paid the invoices believing they were legitimate.” The suspect apparently used fraudulent identification and an account with a bank in Whilster to cash check that he did attain.
It is not yet known whether or not the the suspect was associated with the company listed, Enterprise Corporate Web Hosting. ECWH runs a bare-bones website, and it is not know the level of legitimacy associated with the company, which is based out of Whistler.
While investigators attempt to assess whether or not Enterprise Corporate Web Hosting company is legitimate, the single-page website lends itself to being a fake company. The site claims the company has “over seven thousand clients” and “two hundred employees.” Most in the IT industry would consider that ratio unsustainable, even with $130 invoices for monthly bills.
The site also claims to “web design and promotion” as well as “customer software applications,” “network management”, “and hosting services & co-location,” however, the site does not offer a single pricing detail for any service. The site even includes a “customer's choice aware of business excellence 2008” graphic.
